How to measure at home
Method 1 — Measure an existing ring
Place a ring you already wear comfortably on a ruler. Measure across the inside diameter in millimetres. Match the number to the mm column above.
Method 2 — Measure your finger with a piece of string
Wrap a strip of paper or string around the base of your finger. Mark where it overlaps. Lay it flat and measure the length in millimetres — this is the inside circumference. Divide by π (3.14) to get your diameter, or use this guide:
- 48–49 mm circumference = J–K
- 50–51 mm = L
- 52–53 mm = M–N
- 54–55 mm = O–P
- 56–58 mm = Q–R
Method 3 — Visit a jeweller
Any local jeweller can measure your finger using a sizing tool, free of charge. Best for ensuring perfect fit, especially for engagement rings or important pieces.
A few tips
- Measure at the end of the day — fingers swell in the evening; this gives the most accurate "everyday" size.
- Warm fingers are bigger — avoid measuring after a cold shower or air conditioning.
- Knuckle bigger than the base? Choose a size that slides over the knuckle comfortably but doesn't spin on the finger.
- Each finger is different — measure the exact finger the ring is for.
